The $380 million project involves building ramps from the West Gate Freeway and upgrading a dedicated route for trucks straight to the port.

Truck Action Plan aims to reduce the number of trucks travelling through residential streets in the west. It is expected that Plan will cut the number of trucks using Francis Street and Somerville Road by up to 70 per cent or 5,000 each day.

Extensive investigation and consultation was conducted on 26 potential route options before the final preferred option was identified.

The preferred route connects the new ramps to Hyde Street in Spotswood and follows an upgraded link via Whitehall Street, part of Francis Street and Footscray Road into the port.

The alignment released has identified that the project could directly impact up to 21 homes.

VicRoads will continue to talk to residents and businesses whose properties may be affected by the construction of the project.

With the release of the preferred route, the process for making the required changes to the local planning schemes will begin. This will provide further opportunity for community input through the formal planning scheme approvals process.

Part of the project includes an upgrade to Shepard Bridge in Yarraville, an extra $8 million has just been announced to widen the bridge and build a new cycling and walking path.

VicRoads will soon be advertising details of public displays with maps of the final route.
