WestLink releases route options

WestLink tunnelThree route options for the WestLink project have been released for public comment after several months of technical investigations and community input.

WestLink is a proposed major road project aimed at reducing congestion, removing trucks from local streets and providing an alternative to the West Gate Freeway.

The project has two stages—the first is a tunnel between the Port of Melbourne and the West Footscray area. Stage two is a longer term road connection to the Western Ring Road.

The three options short-listed are variations of a road and tunnel combination between the Port of Melbourne and the Western Ring Road. All options include upgrades to both Dempster Street and Paramount Road.

Despite there being no reservation in place for this project, acquisition of existing residential properties is being kept to a minimum. One option requires the acquisition of five residential properties, while the other two options avoid any residential acquisition.

Linking Melbourne Authority is encouraging community members to attend the public information sessions being held in key locations across Footscray, West Footscray and Sunshine. This will provide a chance for people to speak to the project team, view large maps of the project and provide feedback on the route options.

The community may also view the route options at the Linking Melbourne Authority website and provide feedback by Friday 13 August 2010.
