New operators take the reins
New operators Metro Trains Melbourne (Metro) and Keolis Downer EDI (KDR) took over running Melbourne’s train and tram networks on 30 November.
Both operators will join with the State Government to deliver improvements for Melbourne’s public transport users.

New signalling for drivers as major M1 section opens
State-of-the-art traffic management systems will come on line along the M1 this weekend, as major sections of the Monash Freeway fully open to motorists as part of the Brumby Labor Government’s $1.39 billion upgrade of the corridor.

Sunbury electrification contract awarded
The electrification of the rail line between Sydenham and Sunbury is one step closer with a contract being awarded on the project.
The O'Donnell Griffin and Laing O'Rourke Electrification Joint Venture will join the Victorian Government and rail operators in an Alliance to deliver this $270 million project.

Kick-start for plan to reduce trucks
A plan to reduce trucks in the west of Melbourne has received an $11 million boost. The money will be used for planning the first stage of the Truck Action Plan, including preconstruction planning and early works on Shepherd Bridge in Yarraville.
The Truck Action Plan will create an alternative route for freight to access the Port of Melbourne, removing thousands of trucks away from residential streets, such as Francis Street.

100th VLocity train
Capacity on V/Line train services has been further boosted with the 100th VLocity carriage entering service. The carriage is a milestone in the delivery of regional rolling stock in Victoria.
The V/Line network is experiencing record patronage. Some 12 million trips were made in the past financial year – an increase of 9.5 per cent.

Tenders called for South Morang Rail Extension
Tenders have been called for a construction company to join an alliance to deliver the $650 million South Morang Rail Extension.
The South Morang Rail Extension project includes duplicating the rail between Keon Park and Epping and a double track extension from Epping to South Morang.
Works to extend the Epping line to South Morang will start in 2010. When completed in 2013, the project will provide improved access to high-quality public transport for the booming population in Melbourne’s north.
Other works as part of this project include three major road and rail grade separations at Cooper Street in Epping and Pindari Avenue and Civic Drive in Mill Park. A new premium station will be built in South Morang and Epping station will be relocated to the north side of Cooper Street (east of Davisson Street) in Epping.
The South Morang Rail Extension Request for Proposal documents are available at www.tenders.vic.gov.au and will close no later than 2.00pm on Friday 29 January 2010.

Contract awarded for Nagambie Bypass
Work on a bypass at Nagambie will begin by the end of the year. BMD Constructions has won the contract to duplicate a 3.5 kilometre section of the highway between Kirwans Bridge-Longwood Road and Weir Road.
The bypass will complete the missing link in the freeway route through the Goulburn Valley. This will form part of the national highway network between Melbourne and Brisbane.

Info Hub opens in the west
A one-stop-shop for information about transport projects in the West of Melbourne has opened.
The Victorian Transport Plan Info Hub has been set up in Footscray to connect communities in the West with information on the major projects being delivered as part of the Victorian Transport Plan.

Channel deepening
The deepening of the shipping channel in Port Phillip Bay has been completed ahead of schedule and more than $200 million under budget. The project was Victoria’s largest ever marine infrastructure project.
The Victorian Government put in place the most stringent set of environmental controls ever applied to a dredging project in Australia.

Ouyen-Murrayville line upgrade completed
The upgrade of the Ouyen-Murrayville rail freight line was completed in November, in anticipation of the best grain harvest in several years.
Some 50,000 concrete sleepers have now been installed and other works including ballasting and upgrading of sidings have also been completed.

Report card on progress unveiled
A year ago, the Victorian Transport Plan was launched. It aimed to radically transform our transport network.
On Thursday 3 December, about 250 transport stakeholders attended a breakfast where Premier John Brumby unveiled a report card on the first 12 months of the Victorian Transport Plan.
