Melbourne’s train system goes Metro

Metro branded trainMelbourne’s train system will be branded ‘Metro’ when the new operator starts in December.

The new label has been chosen as we move away from a suburban rail network and towards a metro-style system.

The new brand was unveiled when the Victorian Government announced on Tuesday 1 September that contracts have been signed with the new companies who will run Melbourne’s train and tram network.

First new train arrives

X'trapolis trainThe first of Melbourne’s new trains has arrived in Melbourne by sea from Italy.

The X’trapolis train, one of 38 on order, has been transferred to the Newport rail workshops where it will be fitted out for service. It will then undergo safety accreditation and significant testing before being introduced to the Melbourne network in December.

Springvale Road closure to speed up work

Springvale Road Grade SeparationSpringvale Road will be closed to through traffic at the Nunawading level crossing from 8pm Friday 18 September to 6am Wednesday 30 September.

These works will fast-track the removal of the Springvale Road level crossing and help in the construction of a new six-lane bridge over the rail line. The closure was timed to coincide with the school holidays.

M1 Upgrade progress

M1 UpgradeThe first new exit-ramp on the M1, eastbound onto Montague Street from West Gate Freeway has opened. More new ramps on the M1 are due to open in the coming months.

Port blueprint launched

One of the vital outcomes of this strategy will be the integration of the Port of Melbourne and the Port of Hastings. This will ensure that Victoria’s trading ports are developed effectively and that a successful future is achieved.

Work starts on $4.3 billion rail link

Work starts on Regional Rail Link projectThe construction of the $4.3 billion Regional Rail Link project has started.

Victorian Premier John Brumby, Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport Anthony Albanese and Victorian Minister for Public Transport Lynne Kosky made the announcement on Thursday 27 August 2009. Work started at Southern Cross Station, where construction will begin to platforms 15 and 16.

Contruction starts on Wodonga's new train stationConstruction work has started on Wodonga’s new train station. The new station will have a contemporary design that is sympathetic to the surrounding natural environment. It will also reflect Wodonga’s status as a major regional city.

Escalators open at North Melbourne

North Melbourne StationEscalators will begin functioning for passengers at North Melbourne Station on Monday 7 September 2009. For the first time, commuters will be able to change platforms from either end of the station. Lifts are also available.

More bike cages at stations

Parkiteer bike cageMore bicycle cages are being built in Victoria. The Parkiteer cages offer a free and secure place to park your bike at train stations and park and ride facilities.

There are currently 23 bike cages in locations across Melbourne and regional Victoria. An extra 15 new cages will be built across the state by the end of the year.

Zone 2 buses free in September

BusBuses will be free in Zone 2 for every weekend in September. Melburnians are encouraged to take advantage of the offer.

The service aims to show people how handy buses are to catch cross-town.

Work starts on bridge over Merri Creek

cyclistWork has started on a new cycling and pedestrian bridge over the Merri Creek, which will link Westgarth and North Fitzroy.

The project will help link the popular Merri Creek and Capital City walking and cycling trails.
